Säätyminen
Säätyminen is a Finnish term that refers to the historical process and system by which individuals and families were categorized into social estates (säädy) and to the movement between these estates within a society that organized itself along estate lines. The root sääty means estate or rank, and the suffix -minen forms the noun "the act or process of ...". In this sense, säätyminen covers both the ascribed status at birth and the dynamics that could, though rarely, alter an individual's estate through events such as ennoblement, marriage, wealth expansion, or state service.
