Säähavainnoint, or weather observation, is the process of collecting data about atmospheric conditions. This data is crucial for understanding weather patterns, forecasting future weather, and conducting climate research. Observations are made using a variety of instruments and methods.

Meteorological instruments are employed to measure key weather variables such as temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind speed and direction, and precipitation. Thermometers measure temperature, hygrometers measure humidity, barometers measure pressure, anemometers measure wind speed, and rain gauges measure precipitation. More advanced instruments include radar, which can detect precipitation and wind, and satellites, which provide a broad overview of cloud cover and other atmospheric phenomena.

Observations can be made at ground-based stations, on buoys at sea, from aircraft, and via weather balloons and radiosondes that transmit data as they ascend through the atmosphere. Automated weather stations collect data continuously, while human observers provide additional qualitative information and can verify instrument readings.

The collected data is then transmitted to meteorological centers where it is analyzed and used to create weather maps and forecasts. These forecasts are vital for various sectors, including aviation, agriculture, maritime activities, and public safety.
