Justification means that any practice involving radiation exposure must be justified by the benefits it provides to individuals or society. Optimization, often referred to as the ALARA principle (As Low As Reasonably Achievable), requires that radiation doses are kept as low as possible, taking into account social and economic factors. Limitation involves setting dose limits for individuals to prevent deterministic effects and to reduce the probability of stochastic effects.

Methods of radiation protection vary depending on the type and level of radiation. Shielding is a common technique, utilizing materials like lead, concrete, or water to absorb or block radiation. Distance is another crucial factor; as radiation intensity decreases with the square of the distance from the source, increasing the distance significantly reduces exposure. Time is also important; minimizing the duration of exposure to a radioactive source lowers the total dose received. For internal exposure, preventing the intake of radioactive materials through inhalation or ingestion is paramount, often achieved through appropriate ventilation systems and personal protective equipment. Regulatory bodies establish dose limits and guidelines for radiation safety in various industries and applications.
