The basic principle involves emitting a pulse of electromagnetic energy, which travels towards the target and reflects back to the radar receiver. The time delay between the transmission and reception of the pulse is used to calculate the distance to the target using the formula distance = speed of light × time delay / 2. This division by two accounts for the round trip of the signal. The accuracy of range-based radar systems depends on several factors, including the pulse width, the signal-to-noise ratio, and the stability of the radar's clock. These systems are widely used due to their simplicity and effectiveness in measuring distances, making them a cornerstone of modern radar technology.
