Sähkötyöt

Sähkötyöt is a Finnish term that literally means "electrical work" and broadly denotes the planning, installation, maintenance, repair and testing of electrical systems and equipment. It covers low-voltage and high-voltage installations, household wiring, industrial power distribution, control systems, lighting, and electrical appliance servicing.

Work classified as sähkötyöt ranges from routine tasks such as replacing sockets or fixtures to complex activities like designing distribution boards, earthing systems and motor control panels. It requires understanding of electrical theory, safe work practices, appropriate tools (multimeters, insulation testers, wire strippers, crimpers, insulated hand tools) and correct selection of materials and protective devices.

Safety is a central concern: electrical hazards include shock, arc flash and fire. Good practice includes de-energizing circuits before intervention, verifying absence of voltage, using personal protective equipment, following lockout/tagout procedures and complying with applicable codes. Many countries restrict mains-level electrical work to qualified professionals; in Finland, national regulations and standards—implemented alongside international standards—govern competence, documentation and inspection, and national authorities provide guidance and oversight.

For homeowners and non-specialists, small low-voltage tasks may be permissible, but work on fixed installations or systems connected to the public network typically requires a licensed electrician to ensure safety, legal compliance and proper documentation.
