Sähkönjohtuvuus is a Finnish term that translates to electrical conductivity in English. It is a fundamental property of a material that describes how easily electric current can flow through it. A material with high electrical conductivity allows charge carriers, typically electrons, to move freely, while a material with low electrical conductivity impedes their movement.

The electrical conductivity of a material is the inverse of its electrical resistivity. Resistivity is a measure of how strongly a material opposes the flow of electric current. Therefore, materials with low resistivity have high conductivity and vice versa. Conductivity is typically represented by the Greek letter sigma (σ).

Metals like copper, silver, and gold are excellent electrical conductors due to their metallic bonding, where valence electrons are delocalized and can move easily throughout the material. Insulators, such as rubber, glass, and plastic, have very low electrical conductivity because their electrons are tightly bound to atoms and cannot move freely. Semiconductors, like silicon and germanium, have conductivity values between those of conductors and insulators, and their conductivity can be manipulated by adding impurities (doping).

The unit of electrical conductivity in the International System of Units (SI) is Siemens per meter (S/m). Temperature significantly affects electrical conductivity. For most conductors, conductivity decreases as temperature increases, while for semiconductors, conductivity generally increases with temperature. Understanding electrical conductivity is crucial in various fields, including electronics, materials science, and electrical engineering, for designing and analyzing electrical circuits and devices.
