Szénmegrzés

Szénmegrzés is a Hungarian term that translates to "carbon sequestration" in English. It refers to the long-term storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) or other carbon compounds to prevent its release into the atmosphere. This process is a crucial aspect of strategies aimed at mitigating climate change by reducing greenhouse gas concentrations.

Carbon sequestration can occur naturally through biological processes. Forests and oceans act as significant carbon sinks, absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere through photosynthesis by plants and phytoplankton. Soil also plays a role, storing organic carbon derived from decaying plant and animal matter. These natural mechanisms have historically helped regulate the Earth's carbon cycle.

In addition to natural processes, technological approaches to carbon sequestration, often referred to as carbon capture and storage (CCS), are being developed and implemented. CCS involves capturing CO2 emissions from industrial sources like power plants and then transporting and storing it deep underground in geological formations such as depleted oil and gas reservoirs or saline aquifers. The aim is to permanently remove CO2 from the atmosphere.

The effectiveness and long-term security of carbon sequestration, particularly the geological storage methods, are subjects of ongoing research and debate. Understanding and enhancing both natural and artificial carbon sequestration processes are considered vital for global efforts to combat rising atmospheric CO2 levels and their associated climatic impacts.
