Szulfitbiszulfát

Szulfitbiszulfát, also known as bisulfite or hydrogen sulfite, is a chemical species with the formula [HSO3]−. It is the conjugate base of sulfurous acid (H2SO3) and the conjugate acid of the sulfite ion (SO32−). In aqueous solution, it exists in equilibrium with dissolved sulfur dioxide and sulfite ions, depending on the pH. Sulfurous acid itself is formed when sulfur dioxide gas dissolves in water.

Szulfitbiszulfát plays a significant role in various chemical processes and natural phenomena. It is commonly used as a reducing agent and a disinfectant. In the food industry, it serves as a preservative, preventing spoilage and oxidation, and is often listed as E222. It is also employed in winemaking to prevent bacterial growth and oxidation. However, some individuals may exhibit sensitivity or allergic reactions to sulfites, including szulfitbiszulfát, which can trigger asthma symptoms.

In industrial applications, szulfitbiszulfát is used in the bleaching of paper and textiles, and in the photographic industry. It is also involved in certain wastewater treatment processes to remove chlorine. The reactivity of the bisulfite ion stems from its ability to undergo redox reactions and its nucleophilic character.
