Szulfidvegyület

Szulfidvegyület is a chemical compound that contains sulfur. Sulfur is a nonmetal element with the symbol S and atomic number 16. In szulfidvegyület, sulfur is typically in a reduced state, often with an oxidation state of -2. These compounds are broadly categorized into inorganic and organic types.

Inorganic szulfidvegyület include binary compounds of sulfur with metals or metalloids, such as sodium sulfide (Na₂S), iron(II) sulfide (FeS), and zinc sulfide (ZnS). Many metal sulfides are insoluble in water and are important minerals, for example, pyrite (FeS₂), also known as fool's gold, and galena (PbS), a major source of lead. Some inorganic sulfides, like hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), are gases with a characteristic rotten egg smell and are toxic. They play roles in geological processes and can be found in natural gas and volcanic emissions.

Organic szulfidvegyület, also known as thioethers or sulfides, contain sulfur bonded to two organic groups, with the general formula R-S-R', where R and R' are alkyl or aryl groups. Dimethyl sulfide ((CH₃)₂S) is a simple example. These compounds are found in nature, for example, in amino acids like methionine and cysteine, and also have applications in organic synthesis and as flavor compounds.
