The interaction between an enzyme and its substrate is often described by models like the lock-and-key model, where the active site of the enzyme has a rigid shape that perfectly matches the substrate. A more refined model, the induced-fit model, suggests that the enzyme's active site can undergo a conformational change upon substrate binding, leading to a tighter fit and facilitating catalysis.
