Szolgalom

Szolgalom is a concept in Hungarian social and financial life. It refers to a type of implicit contract where an individual provides a service or benefit to another person, typically in exchange for a regular payment or other form of compensation. Szolgalom can be seen as a form of informal employment, where the worker and the employer agree on a specific set of terms without the presence of a formal employment contract.

In Hungary, szolgalom was more prevalent in the past, particularly among those who were not formally employed or consisted of working in the grey economy. This phenomenon was observed in various industries, including agriculture, construction, and domestic work. Szolgalom allowed workers to maintain some level of job security and access to financial compensation, albeit often without the benefits and protections associated with formal employment.

Szolgalom often lacks transparency and regulation, which can create challenges for both parties involved.
