It is a complex mixture containing organic matter, inorganic solids, pathogens, nutrients, and various chemical compounds. The volume and composition of sludge vary depending on the type of wastewater and the treatment processes employed.

Primary sludge is formed from the settling of solids in primary wastewater treatment. Secondary sludge, also known as biological sludge, is produced during biological treatment processes where microorganisms consume organic pollutants. Tertiary sludge can arise from advanced treatment stages like nutrient removal. Dewatering processes are typically used to reduce the water content of sludge, making it more manageable for transport and further treatment.

Common management options include landfilling, incineration, and land application as fertilizer or soil conditioner, though the latter requires careful monitoring to avoid introducing contaminants into the environment.
