Szemud

Szemud is a village in northern Poland. It is the seat of Gmina Szemud in Wejherowo County, Pomeranian Voivodeship. The village lies in the historic region of Pomerelia and is part of the Kashubian cultural area. It is located not far from the Tricity metropolitan area, with road connections to Wejherowo and Gdańsk.

As the administrative center of the gmina, Szemud administers several surrounding villages and rural settlements. The gmina’s economy is based on agriculture, small services, and local enterprises that serve residents of the countryside.

Historically, the area has roots in medieval Pomerelia. Over the centuries it belonged to various Polish and regional states, and during the partitions it was under Prussian (and later German) rule. Following World War II it became part of Poland again. In 1999, with the current Polish administrative structure, Szemud became part of the Pomeranian Voivodeship and Wejherowo County.

The surrounding landscape comprises farmland, forests, and small waterways typical of the region. The area is associated with Kashubian heritage, and some local traditions, dialect, and architecture reflect this culture. Szemud thus functions as the local administrative and communal center within Wejherowo County and offers access to the broader northern Polish countryside and the Tricity area.
