Szemprotéziskészítés is the Hungarian term for the creation of ocular prostheses, commonly known as artificial eyes. This process involves crafting a custom-made prosthetic eye to fit into the socket of a patient who has lost an eye due to trauma, disease, or congenital defect. The primary goal of a szemprotézis is to restore a natural appearance, improve comfort, and prevent the collapse or deformation of the eye socket.

The fabrication process typically begins with an impression of the eye socket. This impression is then used to create a mold, which is essential for achieving a precise fit. A skilled ocularist, the professional responsible for creating and fitting artificial eyes, will then sculpt the prosthetic eye from a high-quality acrylic material. The color of the iris and the patterns of the sclera (the white part of the eye) are meticulously matched to the patient's remaining natural eye to ensure the most realistic appearance possible. This often involves hand-painting and adding fine details to replicate the unique characteristics of the natural iris, such as flecks and variations in coloration.

Once the prosthetic eye is shaped and colored, it is polished to a smooth finish for maximum comfort. The patient then undergoes a fitting session, where the ocularist ensures the prosthesis sits correctly, moves with the remaining eye as much as possible, and is comfortable for extended wear. Adjustments may be made during this fitting to achieve the optimal result.
