Some substances are packaged into vesicles that fuse with the cell membrane and release their contents outside the cell. Others may pass through the cell membrane directly or via specific transport proteins. The regulation of secretion is tightly controlled by various physiological signals, including hormones, neurotransmitters, and other cellular factors. Disruptions in the secretory process can lead to a range of diseases and physiological disorders.
