Szívtörzsre

Szívtörzsre is a Hungarian term that translates to "heartwood" in English. It refers to the dense, non-living central core of a tree's trunk. In contrast to the sapwood, which is responsible for transporting water and nutrients, the heartwood is primarily structural, providing support and rigidity to the tree.

The formation of heartwood begins as the tree matures. As the sapwood cells age, they undergo changes. Lignin, a complex polymer, accumulates within the cell walls, making the wood denser and harder. Tyloses, balloon-like outgrowths from adjacent living cells, can also form and block the xylem vessels, further reducing water transport. These processes contribute to the characteristic darker color and increased durability of heartwood compared to sapwood.

Heartwood is often more resistant to decay and insect infestation due to the presence of extractives, such as resins, tannins, and oils. This makes it highly valued for various applications, including construction, furniture making, and crafting. Different tree species exhibit varying degrees of heartwood development and extractives, influencing their suitability for specific uses. For example, oak and redwood are well-known for their durable heartwood. The presence and extent of heartwood can be a significant factor in a tree's overall health and lifespan.
