Szénkészítéshez refers to the process of charcoal making, a method of producing carbon-rich fuel through the incomplete combustion of organic materials, typically wood. This ancient technique has been practiced for millennia and remains relevant for various applications, from fuel for cooking and heating to its use in metallurgy and purification processes. The fundamental principle involves heating biomass in an oxygen-limited environment.

The traditional method, known as the clamp or meiler method, involves stacking wood in a conical or rectangular pile, covering it with earth or other insulating materials, and then igniting it from the top or bottom. The limited oxygen supply prevents complete combustion, leading to the pyrolysis of the wood. During pyrolysis, volatile compounds like water, methane, and acetic acid are driven off, leaving behind a porous, carbonaceous residue – charcoal.

Modern charcoal production often utilizes kilns, which offer better control over temperature and airflow, resulting in a more consistent and efficient process. These kilns can be masonry structures, metal retorts, or even portable units. Regardless of the method, the key is to maintain a temperature range that promotes charring without excessive burning. The resulting charcoal is lighter than the original wood, has a higher carbon content, and burns at a higher temperature with less smoke. Its porous structure also makes it an excellent adsorbent, useful in filters for air and water purification. The quality of the charcoal depends on the type of wood used, the temperature and duration of the process, and the method of production.
