Syraöverskott

Syraöverskott, a Swedish term, translates to "acid surplus" and refers to a metabolic condition where the body has an excess of acids relative to its buffering capacity. This can arise from various physiological and pathological processes. For instance, intense physical activity can lead to a temporary accumulation of lactic acid, a common cause of syraöverskott. Other contributing factors include certain diseases such as kidney failure, which impairs the body's ability to excrete acids, or uncontrolled diabetes, which can lead to ketoacidosis, another form of acid surplus. Respiratory issues can also play a role, as impaired lung function can result in carbon dioxide buildup, which dissolves in blood to form carbonic acid, potentially causing an imbalance.

The symptoms of syraöverskott can vary depending on the underlying cause and severity. Mild cases might present with fatigue or muscle discomfort. More severe forms, however, can lead to rapid breathing, confusion, nausea, vomiting, and in critical situations, cardiac arrhythmias or even coma. Diagnosis typically involves blood tests to measure pH levels and analyze the concentration of various acids and bicarbonate, the primary buffer in the blood. Treatment focuses on addressing the root cause, which might involve administering bicarbonate to neutralize excess acid, improving ventilation to facilitate carbon dioxide removal, or managing underlying conditions like diabetes or kidney disease.
