Synreaktio

Synreaktio is a term encountered in several European-language chemistry literature to denote a class of chemical reactions in which two or more reaction pathways proceed in a coordinated fashion to yield a product more efficiently than would be possible if the steps were performed separately. In its broad sense, it captures ideas such as cooperative catalysis, cascade (tandem) reactions, or synergistic mechanisms where catalysts or reaction conditions influence multiple steps at once.

Origin and usage: The word combines syn- from Greek meaning together and reaktio from the Germanic/English "reaction". In Finnish-language sources, synreaktio may be used to describe cooperative or tandem processes; in English, comparable concepts are described as cooperative catalysis, tandem reactions, cascade reactions, or synergistic reactions. The term is not uniformly standardized across journals.

Mechanisms and examples: Synreaktio-type processes often rely on two or more catalysts or reagents that mutually enhance reactivity, such as metal-organocatalyst cooperative systems, or sequential steps designed to occur in a single pot without isolation. Examples include a metal-catalyzed cross-coupling followed by an immediate cyclization, or a two-catalyst system where one catalyst activates a substrate while another catalyst modifies the product in the same reactor. Reference frameworks include cascade reactions, cooperative catalysis, and reaction-network engineering.

Significance: The approach can improve overall yield, selectivity, and process efficiency, reduce purification steps, and enable otherwise difficult transformations.
