Syncells were high-ranking ecclesiastical officials in the early Christian Church, particularly within monastic communities. The term derives from the Greek *synkellos*, meaning "companion" or "assistant," reflecting their role as deputies to abbots or abbesses. Their responsibilities varied but often included overseeing daily operations, managing finances, and ensuring the spiritual discipline of the monastery. Syncells were typically chosen for their wisdom, piety, and administrative skills, though their authority was subordinate to that of the abbot or abbess.

The role of syncells became prominent during the early medieval period, particularly in the Byzantine Empire and Western Europe. In the Eastern Orthodox Church, syncells were sometimes appointed to assist patriarchs or bishops in large dioceses. By contrast, in Western monastic traditions, such as those of Benedictine monasteries, syncells were more commonly found in larger abbeys, where they helped manage complex monastic governance.

The duties of syncells often included mediating disputes, supervising lesser clergy, and ensuring compliance with monastic rules. Some syncells also held spiritual authority, guiding monks in their personal devotion and moral conduct. Over time, the role evolved, and in certain contexts, syncells were elevated to positions of greater influence, sometimes even succeeding abbots.
