Symbolkeying is a term that describes the process of assigning specific meanings or interpretations to symbols, often within a particular context such as a piece of literature, art, or a cultural practice. This assignment of meaning is not inherent to the symbol itself but is a convention established by the creator or within a community.

The practice of symbolkeying is fundamental to understanding various forms of communication. In literature, an author might repeatedly use a certain object or color to represent an abstract concept, such as a dove symbolizing peace or a red dress symbolizing passion. This creates a recurring motif that enriches the narrative and allows for deeper interpretation by the reader who recognizes and understands the established symbolkey.
