Syktyvkar

Syktyvkar is the capital and largest city of the Komi Republic, Russia. It is situated in the northwest part of European Russia on the Sysola River.

The city traces its origins to a settlement on the Sysola and was renamed Syktyvkar in 1930, becoming the administrative center of the Komi Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic in 1936.

As of the early 2020s, the population is around 240,000.

Its economy is based on timber and wood-processing industries, supplemented by light manufacturing, services, and public administration.

Geographically, Syktyvkar lies on the Sysola River and has a humid continental climate with long cold winters and short warm summers.

The city hosts higher education and cultural institutions, including Komi State University, museums, and theatres.

Syktyvkar is served by Syktyvkar Airport (IATA: SCW, ICAO: UESK), with regular connections to Moscow and other cities, and is connected by road and rail to other parts of Russia.
