Sydänsolujen, also known as cardiomyocytes, are the specialized muscle cells that make up the heart. These cells are responsible for the rhythmic contractions that pump blood throughout the body. Cardiomyocytes are unique in their structure and function, possessing several distinct characteristics. They are striated, meaning they have a striped appearance under a microscope due to the organized arrangement of contractile proteins called actin and myosin. This striation is crucial for efficient muscle contraction.

A key feature of cardiomyocytes is their ability to generate electrical impulses. Specialized cells within the heart, known as pacemaker cells, initiate these electrical signals. These signals then propagate to surrounding cardiomyocytes through specialized junctions called intercalated discs. These discs, which contain gap junctions, allow for rapid and synchronized electrical communication, ensuring that the heart muscle contracts as a coordinated unit.

Cardiomyocytes are highly metabolically active and rely heavily on aerobic respiration for energy. They are rich in mitochondria, the powerhouses of the cell, to meet the constant demand for ATP, the energy currency of the cell. Damage to cardiomyocytes, such as that caused by a heart attack, can lead to impaired heart function because these cells have a limited capacity for regeneration. Research into understanding and potentially enhancing cardiomyocyte repair and regeneration is an ongoing area of cardiovascular science.
