Sybase

Sybase, Inc. was an American software company known for its relational database management systems and data-management products. Founded in 1984, it grew into a major vendor of SQL-based database software in the enterprise market. The company’s flagship product was Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE), a commercial relational database management system designed for high-volume transaction processing and data warehousing. ASE supported Transact-SQL and parallel processing features, and it ran on multiple platforms including Unix and Windows.

In addition to ASE, Sybase offered Sybase IQ, a columnar analytics database optimized for large-scale data warehousing and business intelligence workloads; SQL Anywhere, a small-footprint, cross-platform relational database suitable for embedded and mobile applications; and Replication Server, a data replication middleware used to synchronize databases across sites. The mobile software business was housed in iAnywhere Solutions, acquired by Sybase in the mid-2000s, which produced mobile and wireless data services.

In 2010, SAP AG acquired Sybase for about 5.8 billion dollars, integrating its database and mobility technologies into SAP’s product portfolio. The acquisition broadened SAP’s database offerings beyond SAP HANA, with continued development and branding of ASE, IQ, SQL Anywhere, and related tools under SAP. The Sybase brand was absorbed into SAP’s data management and analytics ecosystem, and the products continued to be marketed and developed within the SAP framework.
