Svynya

Svynya is a term that can refer to a pig in several Slavic languages, including Ukrainian and Belarusian. The domestic pig (Sus scrofa domesticus) is a subspecies of wild boar, a Eurasian and North African mammal. Pigs have been domesticated for thousands of years and are raised for their meat, skin, and other products.

In Ukrainian, "свиня" (svynya) specifically denotes a female pig or a pig in general. The male counterpart is typically "кnір" (knir). The word "svynya" can also be used metaphorically in some Slavic languages to describe a dirty or unpleasant person, similar to the English use of "pig." This figurative usage highlights the animal's association with mud and uncleanliness in common perception, although domestic pigs are often kept in much cleaner conditions by farmers.
