Sveitarstjórnum

Sveitarstjórnum refers to local government councils in Iceland. These councils are responsible for the administration and governance of municipalities, which are the basic units of local government. Iceland is divided into numerous municipalities, each with its own sveitarstjórn. The number and size of municipalities have varied over time due to mergers and reorganizations.

The members of a sveitarstjórn are elected by the residents of the municipality for a four-year term.
