Sveisestang

Sveisestang is a Norwegian term that translates to welding rod or welding electrode. It refers to a consumable rod made of metal that is used in various welding processes, most commonly shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), also known as stick welding. The sveisestang serves a dual purpose: it conducts the electric current that creates the arc and melts the base metal, and its coating, when heated, forms a shielding gas and slag that protects the molten weld pool from atmospheric contamination.

The composition of the sveisestang is critical to the weld's integrity. Different types of sveisestenger are designed for welding specific metals and alloys, such as carbon steel, stainless steel, or aluminum. The coating on the sveisestang also plays a role in the welding characteristics, influencing arc stability, penetration, and the appearance of the finished weld. Common coating types include rutile, cellulose, and basic.

When welding, the user holds the sveisestang at a specific angle and distance from the workpiece, initiating and maintaining the electric arc. As the sveisestang melts, filler metal is deposited into the joint, creating a strong bond between the pieces. After the weld solidifies, the slag formed from the coating is typically chipped or brushed away.
