Suurmolekyylisistä, known in English as macromolecules, are very large molecules composed of repeating structural units called monomers. The breakdown of macromolecules into their constituent monomers is called depolymerization, typically achieved through hydrolysis. The unique properties and functions of each macromolecule are determined by its specific sequence of monomers and its three-dimensional structure. Understanding the formation, structure, and function of macromolecules is crucial for comprehending biological processes and developing new materials and technologies.
