Suurjännitejohdot, commonly referred to as high-voltage power lines, are essential components of modern electrical power transmission systems. They are designed to transport electricity over long distances from power generation facilities to substations, where the voltage is then reduced for distribution to consumers. The primary function of high voltage is to minimize energy loss during transmission. According to Ohm's Law and the power formula (P=VI), for a given amount of power, increasing the voltage (V) allows for a decrease in current (I), thereby reducing resistive losses (P_loss = I^2R).

These lines are typically constructed using thick, stranded aluminum conductors supported by tall, robust towers or pylons. The conductors are insulated from the supporting structures, usually by ceramic or polymer insulators, to prevent electrical arcing and ensure safety. The height of the towers and the spacing between conductors are critical design considerations to maintain adequate clearance from the ground, trees, and other structures, safeguarding against accidental contact and environmental interference.

The voltage levels carried by these lines vary significantly depending on the transmission network's design and the distance of transmission. Very high voltage (VHV) lines operate at voltages between 220 kV and 400 kV, while extra-high voltage (EHV) lines can exceed 400 kV, reaching up to 765 kV or even higher in some specialized systems.
