Suuntaantennit, often translated as directional antennas, are radio antennas that radiate or receive radio waves more effectively in a specific direction than in others. This directivity is a key characteristic that distinguishes them from omnidirectional antennas, which radiate or receive equally in all directions. The directional nature of these antennas allows for focused transmission and reception of radio signals, leading to increased range, reduced interference, and improved signal quality.

The design of a directional antenna determines its radiation pattern, which is a graphical representation of its power output in various directions. Different types of directional antennas exist, each suited for specific applications. Examples include Yagi-Uda antennas, parabolic dish antennas, and horn antennas. These designs often employ reflecting elements, focusing structures, or phased arrays of elements to concentrate the radio energy.

The primary benefit of using a directional antenna is enhanced gain in the desired direction. This means that for the same input power, a directional antenna can transmit a stronger signal in its preferred direction compared to an omnidirectional antenna. Conversely, when receiving, it is more sensitive to signals coming from that direction, effectively filtering out signals from other directions. This makes them invaluable in point-to-point communication links, satellite communications, radar systems, and wireless networking where a focused beam of energy is required. The trade-off for this directivity is typically a narrower beamwidth, meaning the antenna is less effective outside its intended direction.
