Susturuldu

Susturuldu is a Turkish term that translates to "it is stopped" or "it is shut down". It became a widely used phrase in Turkey in 2015, particularly after a nationwide protest against Turkey's government, led by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The term was initially used in social media and was promoted by Turkish singer Cem Karaca, who had long been an outspoken critic of the Erdogan government. The phrase was seen as a call to action, urging Turks to stand united against the government's increasingly authoritarian policies.

Protests in Turkey in 2013-2014, sparked by the government's plan to uproot trees in Istanbul's Gezi Park, had been brutally suppressed by the police. However, on May 1, 2015, Erdogan launched a full-scale operation to retake public spaces after weeks of unsuccessful negotiations with a group of environmental activists in Taksim Square. This marked the culmination of a series of protests and clashes between police forces and anti-government crowds.

As protests against the government intensified in June 2015, the editor-in-chief of Turkey's prominent Daily Zaman newspaper, Ertugrul Mavuduryuki, was arrested and his paper was shut down along with its TV and radio stations. The term susturuldu began to symbolize the attempt of President Erdogan's government to silence dissent, raise news blackout, and maintain control over the country's domestic and foreign media.
