Suspender

A suspender is an article of clothing consisting of two or more straps worn over the shoulders to hold up trousers or other garments. The straps connect to the waistband at the front and back, typically by metal clips, fabric-covered clips, or by button-on ends. Modern suspenders are usually made of elastic fabric, but some designs use braided or leather straps. The back of the suspender may be Y-shaped or X-shaped, affecting how the straps meet at the center.

Suspenders vary in attachment method and style. Clip-on suspenders use metal clips that grip the waistband, while button-on suspenders require small buttons sewn into the inside of the trousers. Some designs mix front-button and back-clip configurations. Common materials include elastic webbing for stretch, fabric tape for traditional looks, and leather for a more formal or vintage appearance. Colors and patterns range from solid neutrals to striped or decorative options.

History and use. Suspenders originated in the 19th century as an alternative to belts for holding up trousers, with elasticized versions becoming widespread in the early 20th century. They gained popularity in men’s fashion and later appeared in women’s and children’s wear. Today they are worn for functional reasons, such as comfort or fit, and for style, from formal attire to casual outfits. In some workplaces or uniforms, suspenders remain part of prescribed apparel.

Care and maintenance. Elastic suspender components should be cleaned according to fabric type, with attention to trim and hardware. Leather ends may require conditioning, while metal clips should be checked for rust and cleaned to avoid fabric snagging. Regular inspection helps prevent wear that could cause slipping or breakage.
