Surroundljudslägen, often referred to as surround sound modes, are settings designed to create an immersive audio experience by distributing sound across multiple speakers arranged around the listener. These modes analyze the incoming audio signal and intelligently decode it to direct specific sounds to different channels, such as front left, front right, center, surround left, surround right, and in more advanced systems, additional height channels or rear surrounds.

Common surround sound modes include Dolby Digital, DTS (Digital Theater Systems), and their various iterations like Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, and Dolby Atmos, DTS:X. Each format uses different compression techniques and channel configurations to achieve its sonic goals. Dolby Digital, for instance, is a widely adopted lossy format that typically supports up to 5.1 channels. DTS offers similar capabilities, often with a slightly different approach to data encoding. More advanced formats like Dolby Atmos and DTS:X introduce the concept of "object-based audio," where sounds are not tied to specific speakers but can be placed and moved dynamically within the three-dimensional soundscape, allowing for a more fluid and realistic audio representation.

The effectiveness of these modes depends on the number and placement of speakers, as well as the quality of the audio source material. When properly implemented, surround sound modes can significantly enhance the realism of movies, video games, and even music by creating a sense of space and directionality, pulling the listener into the action or performance.
