Surfside

Surfside is the name of several communities, most prominently Surfside, Florida. Surfside, Florida, is a small coastal town in northeastern Miami-Dade County, located on a barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area and lies just north of Miami Beach along Collins Avenue. The municipality is largely residential, with a mix of single‑family homes and high‑rise condominiums along the shoreline.

As of the 2020 census, Surfside had a resident population of about 5,700. The town covers a compact area and relies on a mayor–commission form of government to administer services such as police, public works, and recreation. Public education for residents falls under the Miami-Dade County Public Schools system.

A defining event in Surfside’s recent history occurred in June 2021, when the Champlain Towers South condominium building partially collapsed, resulting in 98 deaths. The disaster prompted extensive investigations, changes in building inspection protocols, and safety reforms across Florida and other coastal communities.

In addition to Florida, the name Surfside is used by other communities in the United States, including Surfside Beach in South Carolina and Surfside Beach in Texas. The term may also appear in various geographic or neighborhood contexts, reflecting its common usage as a place name.
