Supertree

Supertree is a term used to describe a large, self-supporting vertical garden structure that is part of the Gardens by the Bay in Singapore. These iconic structures, designed by WilkinsonEyre and Grant Associates, are inspired by the form of trees. They stand between 25 and 50 meters tall and are covered in a diverse range of plant life, including epiphytes, ferns, and orchids.

The Supertrees are not merely aesthetic features; they serve several practical functions. Their canopies provide shade, contributing to the microclimate of the gardens. Integrated photovoltaic cells on the upper parts of the Supertrees generate solar power, which is used to light up the gardens at night. Additionally, the Supertrees incorporate systems for harvesting rainwater, which is then used for irrigation and other non-potable needs within the park.

The 18 Supertrees at Gardens by the Bay are divided into two main areas: 12 are located in the Supertree Grove, and six are located in the Kingsford Hilltop Observation Deck area. The grove offers a spectacular evening light and sound show called the Garden Rhapsody. One of the Supertrees, the OCBC Skyway, is a 128-meter-long aerial walkway that connects two of the Supertrees, offering visitors a unique perspective of the gardens from above. The Supertrees have become a symbol of Singapore's commitment to sustainable development and horticultural innovation.
