Superordinate

Superordinate is a term used in classification and semantics to denote a higher-level or more general category in a hierarchical arrangement. A superordinate category encompasses a set of more specific terms or subcategories, which themselves may have further subdivisions. The concept is relative: what is superordinate depends on the chosen level of the hierarchy.

In linguistics and cognitive psychology, superordinate levels are contrasted with basic and subordinate levels of categorization. For example, "animal" is a superordinate term that includes "dog" as a basic-level term, and "poodle" as a subordinate term to "dog". The basic level is often described as the most cognitively salient or efficient for everyday categorization.

The exact ranks depend on the framework, and "superordinate" is used more to describe relative position than a fixed rank.
