Supernovaräjäykset, or supernova explosions, are catastrophic stellar events that mark the end of a star's life. These incredibly powerful explosions occur when a star exhausts its nuclear fuel, leading to a sudden and dramatic release of energy. There are two primary types of supernovae. The first type, known as Type Ia supernovae, happens in binary star systems. In this scenario, a white dwarf star accretes matter from its companion star. When the white dwarf reaches a critical mass, known as the Chandrasekhar limit, it triggers runaway nuclear fusion, resulting in an explosion.

The second type of supernova, core-collapse supernovae, occurs in massive stars. When these stars run out of fuel in their core, gravity overwhelms the internal pressure, causing the core to collapse. This collapse leads to a rebound shockwave that blasts the outer layers of the star into space. Supernova explosions are crucial in the universe. They are responsible for synthesizing and dispersing heavy elements, such as iron, gold, and uranium, into the interstellar medium. These elements are then incorporated into new stars and planets, forming the building blocks of the cosmos. The remnants of supernovae can also form neutron stars or black holes, depending on the mass of the original star. Observing supernovae allows astronomers to study stellar evolution, the composition of the universe, and the expansion of spacetime.
