These incredibly powerful explosions occur when a star exhausts its nuclear fuel, leading to a sudden and dramatic release of energy. There are two primary types of supernovae. The first type, known as Type Ia supernovae, happens in binary star systems. In this scenario, a white dwarf star accretes matter from its companion star. When the white dwarf reaches a critical mass, known as the Chandrasekhar limit, it triggers runaway nuclear fusion, resulting in an explosion.
