Superklassi

Superklassi refers to a theoretical concept in genetics and evolutionary biology, though its precise definition and application can vary depending on the context. It is often used to describe a taxonomic rank above class and below phylum or division, essentially a very high-level grouping of organisms. However, the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) and the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICNafp) do not formally recognize "superclass" as an official rank. Despite this, the term is sometimes employed in scientific literature to facilitate discussion of broad evolutionary relationships and to group together classes that share significant, defining characteristics not present in other classes.

The concept of a superclass can be useful for organizing vast amounts of biodiversity data and for highlighting major evolutionary divergences. For instance, in zoology, a superclass might be used to group related classes within a phylum, such as grouping all classes of jawed vertebrates within a larger superclass. Similarly, in botany, a superclass could potentially be used to organize major groups of flowering plants. The utility of superklassi lies in its ability to provide an intermediate level of classification that can aid in understanding phylogenetic trees and the hierarchical structure of life. However, due to its unofficial status, classifications using superclass are often treated as informal or heuristic rather than strictly taxonomic. Researchers may use the term to propose hypotheses about evolutionary history or to simplify complex phylogenetic relationships for educational purposes.
