The primary purpose is to determine how well a material or a protective coating will withstand corrosion over time when exposed to a salt-laden atmosphere.

The standard procedure involves exposing specimens to a fine mist of a salt solution, typically sodium chloride (NaCl), in a controlled environment. The concentration of the salt solution, temperature, humidity, and duration of the test are all carefully specified by relevant standards, such as ISO 9227 or ASTM B117. These parameters are crucial for ensuring reproducibility and comparability of results across different laboratories and for different materials.

During the test, the salt solution comes into contact with the surface of the material or coating. The salt, along with moisture and oxygen, initiates and accelerates electrochemical corrosion processes. The specimens are periodically inspected for signs of corrosion, such as rust, pitting, blistering, or delamination of coatings. The extent and severity of the corrosion are then assessed and compared against predefined acceptance criteria or used to estimate the service life of the material in a corrosive environment.
