Suodatinpressi, often translated as filter press, is a piece of industrial equipment used for solid-liquid separation. It operates by forcing a slurry, which is a mixture of solid particles and liquid, through a series of filter cloths. These cloths are held in place by plates and frames, or sometimes by a single, large membrane. As the slurry passes through the filter media, the solid particles are retained on the surface of the cloth, forming a filter cake, while the liquid, now called filtrate, passes through and is collected.

The process typically begins by pumping the slurry into the chamber formed by the plates and frames. Pressure is applied, either mechanically or hydraulically, to push the liquid through the filter cloths. Once the cake has reached a desired thickness or the flow rate has significantly decreased, the pressure is released. The plates are then separated, allowing access to the accumulated filter cake. This cake can then be removed, often by manual scraping or by automated systems, and the filter press is ready for the next filtration cycle.

Filter presses are widely used across various industries, including wastewater treatment, mining, chemical processing, food and beverage production, and pharmaceuticals. They are valued for their ability to handle a wide range of solid concentrations and particle sizes, producing a relatively dry filter cake that is easier to dispose of or further process. The specific design and materials of a filter press are chosen based on the properties of the slurry being processed and the required efficiency of the separation.
