Suodatinkenttäkompostointi, also known as biofilter composting or a filter field compost system, is a wastewater treatment method that combines composting with biological filtration. It is typically used for treating domestic wastewater, especially in areas without access to centralized sewage systems. The system consists of a composting layer, often constructed from organic materials like wood chips, straw, or peat, which acts as a filter medium. Wastewater is introduced to the top of this filter bed, where it percolates downwards.

As the wastewater flows through the organic material, microorganisms present in the compost break down organic pollutants and pathogens. The porous nature of the filter bed allows for aeration, which supports aerobic decomposition. This process effectively reduces the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), suspended solids, and nutrient content of the wastewater. The compost material itself acts as a carbon source and provides a habitat for the beneficial microbes.

The treated effluent from the bottom of the filter bed is then further purified. In some designs, this may involve a secondary treatment stage or direct discharge into the environment, depending on local regulations and the desired level of treatment. The composting process also contributes to the stabilization of organic matter, reducing odor and the potential for disease transmission. Suodatinkenttäkompostointi systems are often chosen for their relatively low energy requirements and their ability to handle varying wastewater flows. The maintenance typically involves periodic replenishment or replacement of the filter media and monitoring of the treatment process.
