Summaten

Summaten is a term used to describe a family of data-aggregation techniques that generalize simple summation by incorporating adaptive weighting and non-linear attenuation in the summation process. In its broad sense, a summaten operation converts a multiset of numbers into a single representative value while attempting to be robust to outliers and distributional variation.

Mechanism and variants. A basic summaten maps a set of values x1, x2, ..., xn to a weighted sum S = sum_i w_i x_i, where the weights w_i depend on the data and are typically constrained to sum to one. A common realization calculates weights from a central tendency m (such as a mean or median) using a non-increasing function φ of the distance to m, for example w_i = φ(|x_i − m|) / sum_j φ(|x_j − m|). This downweights values that lie far from the central tendency, yielding a robust summary compared with ordinary summation. Another variant applies a non-linear transformation g to each element before summation: S = sum_i g(x_i). The choice of φ or g defines the robustness and behavior of the summaten method.

Applications. Summaten is discussed in statistical and computational contexts as a means of summarizing data when outliers or skewed distributions are a concern. It has potential applications in sensor fusion, financial risk aggregation, streaming data analysis, and exploratory data analysis, where a single representative value is needed without unduly amplifying extreme observations.
