Sulfidiyhdisteissä, known in English as sulfur compounds, are chemical substances containing sulfur atoms. Sulfur, a nonmetal element, readily forms bonds with many other elements, leading to a vast array of compounds with diverse properties and applications. The most common oxidation state of sulfur in these compounds is -2, as seen in sulfides, where sulfur is bonded to less electronegative elements, typically metals. However, sulfur can also exhibit positive oxidation states, forming sulfites, sulfates, and thiosulfates, among others, with oxygen.

These compounds are found throughout nature. Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) is a gas with a characteristic rotten egg smell, often produced by the decomposition of organic matter. Sulfides are abundant in the Earth's crust, forming important mineral ores such as pyrite (iron sulfide) and galena (lead sulfide). Many biological processes involve sulfur compounds, including the amino acids cysteine and methionine, which are essential components of proteins.

The chemical industry utilizes a wide range of sulfur compounds. Sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄), a strong acid, is one of the most important industrial chemicals, used in fertilizer production, petroleum refining, and wastewater processing. Sulfur dioxide (SO₂) is employed as a bleaching agent and a preservative. Organic sulfur compounds, containing carbon-sulfur bonds, are prevalent in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and fragrances.
