Sulamistemperatuur, often referred to as melting point, is a fundamental physical property of a solid substance. It represents the specific temperature at which a solid transitions into a liquid state under a given pressure. At the melting point, the substance exists in equilibrium between its solid and liquid phases, meaning both states can coexist.

The melting point is an intrinsic characteristic of a pure crystalline substance. Different substances have distinct melting points. For instance, water freezes and melts at 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit), while iron melts at a much higher temperature, approximately 1538 degrees Celsius (2800 degrees Fahrenheit). Impurities in a solid generally lower its melting point and can also cause it to melt over a range of temperatures rather than at a single sharp point.

Understanding melting points is crucial in various scientific and industrial applications. It aids in identifying unknown substances, determining their purity, and designing processes that involve phase transitions, such as metallurgy, chemical synthesis, and food processing. The intermolecular forces within a substance dictate its melting point; stronger forces require more thermal energy to overcome, resulting in a higher melting point.
