Sukulaissuhdetta

Sukulaissuhdetta refers to the connection between people who share a common ancestor or are linked through marriage. The term is used in Finnish to discuss kinship and family ties, and it can be analyzed in both everyday and scientific contexts. The concept distinguishes verisukulaiset, or blood relatives, from relatives by marriage, and it can cover relationships from parents and siblings to more distant cousins, aunts, uncles, and in-laws.

In family studies and social science, sukulaissuhdetta is a basis for examining family structures, lineage, and social networks. In genealogical work, it underpins the construction of family trees (sukutaulu) and the tracing of ancestral lines. The breadth of kinship can vary across cultures and individuals, with some networks extending across generations and others being more nuclear.
