A suiveur, a French term meaning "follower," refers to a type of artist or craftsman who emulates the style and techniques of a prominent master. Suiveurs were common throughout art history, particularly during periods when workshops were central to artistic production. These artists, often apprentices or assistants, would learn from and work under a renowned master, absorbing their aesthetic and methods.

After the master's death or retirement, their students might continue to produce works in the master's style. This practice served several purposes. It allowed the master's artistic legacy to endure and ensured a continued supply of works in a popular style for patrons. For the suiveur, it provided a means of earning a living and establishing their own reputation, often by producing works that were difficult to distinguish from those of their teacher.
