Suihkukastelua

Suihkukastelu, or sprinkler irrigation, is a method of applying irrigation water by means of spray nozzles that release water into the air, creating a sprinkler pattern over soil, crops, or landscape. It is used to deliver water to a defined area with relatively uniform distribution and can be employed in agricultural fields, lawns, orchards, nurseries, and greenhouses.

The system consists of a water source, a pumping unit (often with filtration and pressure regulation), a distribution network of pipes, and sprinkler heads or spray nozzles. Water is pressurized and distributed to the sprinklers, which discharge water as a spray. Systems can be fixed or movable and may be controlled by timers or soil moisture sensors to match crop water requirements and local climate conditions.

Applications range from large-scale field irrigation to compact greenhouse setups. Suihkukastelu is particularly suitable for crops requiring uniform wetting, for hard-to-irrigate soils, or when foliar cooling is desired. It can also be used for nursery propagation and turf management. In greenhouse settings, overhead sprinklers or misting systems may provide both irrigation and climate control benefits.

Advantages of spray irrigation include relatively uniform water application, adaptability to uneven terrain, and the ability to apply water without disturbing the soil surface. Limitations include sensitivity to wind which can cause drift, higher energy and equipment costs, risk of leaf and fruit wetting that may promote disease, and potential clogging of emitters if filtration is inadequate.

Effective use relies on proper design, water quality management, appropriate precipitation rates, and, where possible, integration with soil moisture monitoring and weather data to optimize efficiency.
