Sugárkárosodás

Sugárkárosodás refers to the damage that can occur to living tissues and organs due to exposure to ionizing radiation. This type of radiation, which includes X-rays, gamma rays, and alpha and beta particles, has enough energy to remove electrons from atoms and molecules, a process called ionization. This ionization can disrupt the normal chemical processes within cells, leading to cell damage or death.

The effects of radiation exposure can be broadly categorized into deterministic and stochastic effects. Deterministic effects, also known as tissue reactions, occur when a significant dose of radiation is delivered to a large volume of tissue. These effects have a threshold dose below which they are unlikely to occur, and their severity increases with the dose. Examples include skin burns, hair loss, and cataracts.

Stochastic effects, on the other hand, are probabilistic in nature. They are not dependent on a threshold dose, meaning any amount of radiation exposure carries a risk, however small. The probability of these effects occurring increases with the dose, but their severity does not. The most well-known stochastic effect is cancer, which can develop years or even decades after radiation exposure due to mutations in DNA. Genetic mutations in reproductive cells are also considered stochastic effects, potentially leading to heritable conditions in offspring.

The severity and type of radiation damage depend on several factors, including the total dose of radiation received, the dose rate (how quickly the dose is delivered), the type of radiation, and the sensitivity of the exposed tissue or organ. Certain tissues, such as rapidly dividing cells like those in bone marrow and the lining of the gastrointestinal tract, are more susceptible to radiation damage than others.
