The word is formed from substrate with the agent-noun suffix -ista, a construction common in Romance-influenced languages to indicate a specialist. Because it is not a universally standardized term, its exact meaning can vary by field and region.

In materials science and electronics, a substratista might work on selecting and engineering substrates such as silicon wafers, glass, ceramics, or flexible polymers to optimize device performance, reliability, and manufacturing compatibility.
