Substitutiven

Substitutiven is an adjective used in several academic contexts to describe a capacity or property whereby one element can be replaced by another without altering the system’s essential function, meaning, or outcome. The term is not tied to a single field but appears in discussions of logic, linguistics, chemistry, and computer science to indicate substitutability or substitutive equivalence.

In philosophy and logic, substitutivity refers to the principle that if two objects are identical, they can replace one another in any context without affecting truth conditions. This idea underpins the substitutivity of identicals but faces limits in opaque or context-sensitive expressions where replacement can change referential or semantic effects. Substitutiven analysis then helps examine when and where such replacements preserve meaning or truth.
